I ran my first 5k in April 2009. To my surprise, I won 1st in my age group, which sparked my desire to do more and challenge myself. I ran my first half marathon in 2010, and my first marathon in January 2014 (before my 50th birthday)!
I will be running my first Boston this year (2026), which will actually be my third World Major Marathon and I have volunteered at the Boston Marathon for the last four years.
What excites me most about running is the sense of accomplishment. I recall when I was younger, that I had to go off the track during our county field day and get oxygen. I didn't even make it around the track one time. I have definitely learned from that experience. I put on my music, find my rhythm, and enjoy my surroundings. The run becomes my time to think, process, or sometimes not think at all. I love feeling myself get stronger and more capable with each run, especially when I realize I can go farther or push through moments that used to stop me. Running gives me a sense of freedom and independence and it helps me release stress and reset emotionally. More than anything, it reminds me that I’m someone who can show up, keep going, and trust myself, even when things get hard.
I would tell my fellow runners to keep showing up. Set a goal for yourself and make a plan. Surround yourself with people who support and encourage you.
Every run won’t feel good, and that’s okay—what matters is that you keep going. Run your own race, trust the process, which is what I had to tell myself when I ran my first marathon.
On hard days, take it one step at a time; on good days, soak it in. You’re stronger than you think, and every mile counts. Also, remember why you started and be the best YOU!!!
